All students have the ability to demonstrate leadership qualities and skills. We have many opportunities for student leadership at the College, for example:

  • Lamp Bearers at Year 12 (traditionally recognised as School Captains)
  • Student Representative Council (2 students from each year level)
  • House Captains (4-8 students at each year level)
  • Student Participation Group (2 representatives from each homeroom)

Students have other opportunities to display leadership in areas involving sustainability, choir, school band, library monitors, bus monitors and liturgy group.

We also incorporate programs such as Peer Support to allow students to foster relationships and develop connectedness, not only amongst the members of their year level, but also throughout the school.

Moreover the Justice and Democracy Forum, the St. Vincent de Paul Chapter and the Leos Club forge strong links to our Kildare ministry value of Practicing Justice and Service.

Role of Lamp Bearers

The Lamp Bearers are elected at the end of Year 11. The criteria for selection is comprehensive and looks at the contribution of nominees to the life of the school community over their 5 years at Marian.

Criteria for Selection:

The students chosen demonstrate the following strengths:

  • In class, always tries her very best, has a real love of learning and is up to date with her work and demonstrates good organisation.
  • Is cooperative with staff and students and always offers extra assistance.
  • ls a good homeroom member, doing extra duties and often volunteering in any way.
  • Demonstrates participation in other aspects of school life, for example, practising justice and service in such areas as JDF. St Vincent de Paul, Youth Forum, School Production, Athletics/Swimming Carnivals, Brigidine Celebration Day, Open Days, etc.
  • Relates well with all members of the year level, is welcoming and inclusive of all, is respected by other students’ across the year level.
  • Reflects the school motto of “Strength and Kindness” and displays this in her everyday life at school.
  • Those students elected to this role play a significant leadership role in the life of the school with importance placed on:
  • Representing the School Community on all formal occasions.
  • Representing the School Community in meetings with the Principal
  • Being part of the Senior Leadership Team with the Student Representative Council Members at Year 12
  • Leading the school community in all celebrations such as School Assemblies, School Masses and the Awards Night.
  • Being involved in the planning and organisation of Leadership Formation Days.
  • Being involved in the planning and organisation of activities such as Brigidine Celebration day, and Swimming and Athletics Camivals.
  • Involved in the planning and organisation of Leadership initiatives such as the School Charter, etc.
  • Look at overall school issues such as fundraising, maintenance and environment, Student Wellbeing and Teaching and Learning.

Student Representative Council

The Student Representative Council consists of two representatives from each Year Level and, with the Lamp Bearers, represents the key student leadership group within the school. The two representatives at each year level are elected by the entire year level and are students that will represent the whole year level at the council.

They aspire to:

  • Look at overall school issues such as fundraising, maintenance and environment, Student Wellbeing and Teaching and Learning.
  • Be involved in the planning and organization of leadership activities such as the school charter. etc.
  • Be involved in the planning and organization of activities such as Brigidine Celebration Day, Swimming and Athletics Carnivals.
  • Be involved in whole school celebrations such as School Assemblies, School Masses and the Awards Night.
  • Play an active role in the meetings that take place between the Year Level Leaders and the SPG Representatives at each year level.

House Leaders & House Captains

The role of our House Captains are incorporated into the Student Wellbeing framework. Our aim is to encourage and facilitate a leadership role for the House Captains with a view to increasing student connectivity within each house.

The House Captains work with the Director of Students and their focus throughout the year will be on contributing to numerous school-based and external activities/events.

They are also involved in the introduction of lunchtime sporting activities which will allow for the interaction of students within their House groups in a safe, supportive and fun atmosphere.

House Captains also oversee the points system at the College. House members will collect points based on the activities they participate in.

Each house at each Year Level elects one or two students to represent their house. House Captains:

  • represent their house at their respective year levels;
  • are involved in the planning and organization of whole school activities such as Brigidine Celebration Day and Athletics Carnivals;
  • are involved in the planning and organization of year level activities such the House Competitions in Soccer, Netball and Basketball.

Student Participation Group

Two representatives are elected from each class within the year level. With the SRC Representatives they become the key leadership group of the Year Level.

  • They represent the concems of the students from their homeroom.
  • They meet with the Year Level Leader at each year level and discuss the issues that cause concern amongst the year level and classes
  • These issues are then taken by the SRC Representatives to the SRC.
  • They are involved in the planning and organisation of activities within the year level such as Reflection Days, and Socials and specific year level activities that are organised.
  • They are involved in the planning of whole school activities such as Brigidine Celebration Day, and Athletics Camivals.
